The Shanghai Hotels Association says that 35 four and five star brand hotels in the city, including the Westin Shanghai, Okura Garden Hotel and Grand Hyatt, will adopt ten measures to save energy and promote the concept of environmental protection.

These measures include using boiler systems which can help save up to 3% of energy; removing all the light-tight curtains from rooms facing the west; replacing the original diode bulbs with 10W energy-saving bulbs in guest rooms or meeting rooms; installing photoelectrical sensors on the automatic escalator which stop operation when no one takes the escalator; using diode bulbs to replace the light in the signs at safety exits.

Each hotel will adopt a smart energy-saving management system for central air conditioning, which can help save as much as 60000 kilowatts of electricity each month.

They will also add some water-saving devices in the bathroom to save water.

Shanghai is due to hold the World Expo in 2010, and like Beijing which has launched eco-friendly campaigns to prepare for the Olympics, Shanghai is trying to also show the world it is following world-level standards.
