The State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO) is planning to amend the current patent law of China to eliminate existing problems in the law, in particular to curb the useless patents that contain no real innovations.

The amendments have been flowing into the office and public biddings have been organized for relevant topics.

According to Tian Lipu, director of SIPO, apart from revising the current patent law, SIPO will provide support to new high-tech patents by encouraging the local governments to offer funds assistance and stimulus policies.

In 2005, China's trademark registrations reached 588,000, and new patent and outlook design patents hit 110,000 each, ranking first in the world. However SIPO admits that many were granted in lieu of any real innovation.
