China's Internet Industry Called For Better Oversight
During a seminar sponsored by the Internet Society of China in Hainan this past weekend, industry and government representatives called for better management of China's Internet resources.
With 111 million current Internet users in China, Li Jiaming, director general of the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Centre, said since June 2004 he has received more than 240,000 reports of illegal content on Chinese webpages.
Local media report that of those 240,00 reported incidents, 68.2% were pornography related, and 8.15% concerned gambling, phishing, and fraud.
The attendees called on more self-administered rules by the Internet firms themselves to rid porn and illegal information from China's Internet space.
