Lee Scott, CEO of Wal-Mart, says Wal-Mart will consider packaging a key factor in choosing suppliers in the future.
Announced on September 22 in New York, this global plan will be formally implemented from the beginning of 2008. It aims to reduce 5% of all packing material in the same year. Lee Scott says that the improvement of packaging will help reduce material and save resources during transportation, manufacture, shipping and storage processes. Wal-Mart will begin to announce this plan to 2000 suppliers all over the world on November 1.
Dong Yuguo, a representative for Wal-Mart China, says that Chinese enterprises will surely be included in the list of these 2000 suppliers.
According to local media, Wal-Mart's Ethical Standards Department, which is responsible for making CSR-related decisions for Wal-Mart, will be introducing the plan to Chinese retailers.
