Yang Weilong, chairman of the Yangcheng Lake Crabs Association, has made a response to the claim that Yangcheng Lake crabs had been found to contain cancer-causing substances in Taiwan.
Yang says that it is impossible that their crabs contain cancer causing substances and a further investigation is now underway.
Earlier, Taiwan media reported that crabs from the Kunshan Yangcheng Lake Aquatic Products Company contained nitrofurans metabolite which may cause cancer. The Kunshan Government, Yangcheng Lake Crabs Association and Yangcheng Lake Fishing Port Superintendence Bureau have jointly conducted an investigation following the report. The content of this investigation covers whether the crabs are real Yangcheng Lake crabs, whether they have been exported according to the rules and if they contain cancer-causing substances.
Yang Weilong says that he believes that Yangcheng Lake crabs have no problem in food safety. He says maybe the problematic crabs are fake Yangcheng Lake crabs.
Taiwanese health departments have recalled the crabs and the result of the investigation will come out soon.
