SEPA: Shanghai-Hangzhou Maglev Will Be Assessed
Zhang Lijun, deputy director of State Environment Protection Administration, has told Beijing News that SEPA has received an environmental assessment report for the planned Shanghai-Hangzhou Maglev Train.
The building contractors issued the report and SEPA says it will now invite experts to assess the project's environmental impact.
The project of Shanghai-Hangzhou magnetic levitation train line was approved by the State Development and Reform Commission in March 2006. As it impacts the direct interests of people living along the route, some residents, scholars and organizations have been questioning its environmental impact.
Zhang said SEPA would make a decision on the project based on scientific evaluation and after hearing the opinions of both the experts and the general public.

Since Maglev is clearly the wave of the future, making all conventional high-speed rail obsolete, the construction of the Shanghai-Hangzhou line will be the signal to the rest of the world that long-distance intercity lines are now established. The commitment to Maglev, particularly national and international lines, will ensure all those nations doing so the revitaization of their economies, and future prosperity. There are a significant number of us watching with hope and anticipation that the Chinese authorities and general public will give the positive go-ahead.
