While the entire city embraced the 2007 Special Olympics Summer Games, Le Royal Meridien Shanghai welcomed Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the founder of Special Olympics, to the hotel to host her grand reception, attended by many VIPs including the Shanghai vice mayor. As founder and honorary chairperson of the Special Olympics, Shriver has been a leader in the worldwide struggle for over three decades to improve and enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
