Great Wall Friendship Award Given To WHO Doctor
Beijing's Mayor Guo Jinlong has presented the 2007 Great Wall Friendship Award to Dr. Gerald Moy of the World Health Organization and to 11 other fellow recipients for their contributions to the social and economic progress of Beijing.
Dr Moy, who is with the WHO Department of Food Safety, Zoonoses and Foodborne Diseases in Geneva, Switzerland was given the award based on his work with the Beijing Food Safety Administration. For the past three years he has served as an adviser on food safety preparations for the Beijing Olympics and in particular, contributed to training materials for food handlers. He was also instrumental in the development of the "The 3 Fives — Healthy choices, healthy life" campaign, which is launched in March in collaboration with the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad, the Beijing Food Safety Administration and the Chinese Ministry of Health.
The award, which is given annually, is the second time that WHO has been honored. The first time was in 2003 when Dr Henk Bekedam, WHO Representative to China received the award.
In November 2007, Dr. Moy facilitated the adoption of the Beijing Declaration on Food Safety, which for the first time recognized safe food as an individual human right.
