UN: Kyoto Protocol Applicable To Macau
The Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau says that the United Nations has confirmed that the Kyoto Protocol will be applicable to Macau as of January 2008 and SMG has called on the public to coordinate with Macau SAR's efforts in improving the global environment.
Macau SAR raised the relevant request to the Chinese central government in December 2007 regarding the applicability of Kyoto Protocol in Macau. After being approved by the central government, Macau submitted a note to the UN Secretary-General on January 10 via Wang Guangya, China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Later, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon notified the government of the People's Republic of China in the name of an assignee that Kyoto Protocol would be used in Macau from January 14, 2008. China approved the Kyoto Protocol in 2002.
SMG said that Macau SAR would strengthen its relevant plans, activities and measures to maintain the sustainable development of each economic and social sector, avoid the deterioration of global climate and improve the environment quality.
