A waste water processing plant with a daily production capacity of up to two million cubic meters will be unveiled in Shanghai this year.

Shanghai Municipal Construction Investment and Development Corporation will invest a total of RMB2.2 billion in renovating and rebuilding Shanghai Bailonggang Waste Water Processing Plant, which is regarded as one of the major environment projects of Shanghai. According to Zhang Yide, chief engineer of Shanghai Bailonggang Waste Water Processing Co., Ltd, after the completion of the renovation, the plant's capacity will account for about one-third of the total of Shanghai and the plant will be the largest one in Asia. Zhao says that they also expect that the capacity of the plant will reach 3.42 million cubic meters per day and be the largest one in the world.

The plant is expected to be put into trial operation in June 2008 and achieve expected results within the year.

According to Shanghai's general plan, by 2010, the city will have a waste water processing system that covers the whole city, with a waste water processing rate of up to 80%. In addition, the COD emission of the city will be reduced by 15% based on that of 2005 and limited to about 259,000 tons.
