In response to German reports that some of the Barbie doll materials are harmful, the Beijing Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision plans to conduct spot checks to analyze the toys' quality.

The Bureau additionally said that though it routinely conducts tests on other toys, the fashionable Barbie was exempt from previous checks because it is "a famous brand".

For its part, Mattel China says that the Barbie parts do adhere to international safety standards.
