According to draft guidelines of the next five-year development plan unveiled at the Tenth National's People' Congress (NPC), China is working on decreasing occupational deaths by 35% per unit GDP by 2010.
The plan was submitted for approval during the NPC, which started this past Sunday.
According to State Administration of Work Safety statistics reported by Xinhua, occupational accidents caused an annual economic loss of RMB25 billion, which is about 2% of China's annual GDP.
In 2005, China reported four coal mine disasters with respective death tolls above 100, and about 6,000 miners were killed in accidents last year.
No details have been revealed yet about the contents of the draft guidelines or what steps the Chinese government hopes to take to reduce injuries and deaths.
