The latest report from China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) shows that only 66% of unfermented bean products in the country are qualified and Sudan Red has once again been identified on some of those bean products.
AQSIQ found Sudan Red on the bean products of Changsha Tianyu Food and Trade Company called Tianyun Chaihuo Xianggan.
AQSIQ has also published the names of five companies that make these unqualified products. They are Changsha Tianyu Food Company, Pingjiang Jiazhen Food Company, Chongqing Jiangbei Fenglin Food Company, Nanjing Gaochunweitaxing Food Company, and Nanjing Chanmao Food Company.
A representative from AQSIQ says that most of the quality problems involve high levels of bacteria, overuse of preservatives, and excessive use of dyes.
According to the audit results, the quality rates of medium and large manufacturers are 82.65% and that of small enterprises are 51.9%.
Last April, AQSIQ announced that it had discovered the cancer-causing Sudan I in 88 kinds of food. The main manufacturer of Sudan I was found at the time to be Guangzhou Tianyang Food Company. Tianyang is a food additive maker that mainly produces pepper oil and pepper powder.
