Workers Protest Low Wages At Hong Kong KFC
Twenty representatives from the Catering and Hotels Industries Employees General Union of Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions gathered this week at the KFC Causeway Bay store to protest against the low wages paid by the fried chicken vendor to its employees.
According to a survey carried out by HKCTU, among the top seven fast food chains, KFC offers the lowest wages, which only average HK$15.7 per hour. In addition, KFC asks part-time workers to take one week off after three weeks' work in order to avoid offering annual vacations and labor holidays.
A spokesperson from KFC quoted in local media explains that the wages for employees is related to their performance and is determined according to their working hours, ability and positions. KFC says it adjusts the working hours in accordance with the employees' needs.
