In order alleviate the educational problems for children of the city's floating population, Beijing says it spends RMB80 million to RMB100 million every year on this special group.
Beijing Vice-Mayor Sun Anming said during a work report meeting that primary and junior high schools of the city should enroll students without offering them an exam. Sun also said schools should take advantage of their electronic student management system to control trans-district or floating of students. Sun also listed problems for the compulsory education period, including the education of children from the floating population for which he said that a general coordination, comprehensive study, unified policy and joint solution are needed.
Xian Lianping, deputy director of Beijing Municipal Education Department, says that Beijing's municipal and district level governments are now studying the education issues of migrant workers' children and each district may take a different measure for the issue according to their real condition to ensure the schooling of these children.
At present, there are 400,000 schooling children of floating population receiving compulsory education in Beijing. Of that number, about 250,000 are attending public schools and over 100,000 are going to about 200 schools that have been specially opened for them, but have not been approved by the government.
