The Beijing Municipal Personnel Bureau has announced the 12 most wanted university majors and said that they will allow students of these 12 majors whose permanent residence is not in Beijing to stay and work in the city after their graduation.
The 12 most unwanted majors are Computer Science and Technology; Mechanical Engineering and Automation; Electronics Science and Technology; Clinical Medicine; Communications and Information Systems; Marketing; Architectural Engineering; Biomedicine; Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; Material Science; Accounting; and Finance.
According to BMPB, Beijing will only allow non-Beijing students of the said majors enrolled after taking the national college entrance examination to work in the city. Other students who take informal education classes such as adult education, self-taught education or long-distance education do not fall into the category even though they might possess the same educational level.
In addition, BMPB says that non-Beijing native students must meet seven conditions if they want to obtain a Beijing hukou, or residence permit. The conditions include owning a bachelors degree or above, graduating from an officially recognized university and taking a major that is the most wanted by the city.
BMPB asks employers to report the students they are going to hire before April 30, 2008 so that residence permits can be issued.
