Zhang Yanyou, the deputy director of the Beijing Development and Reform Commission, has disclosed to local media that Beijing may soon levy an environmental tax on car owners in the city.
According to Zhang, China is studying the reform of environmental taxes and all automobiles are to be subject to the environmental tax. Zhang says this also means that car owners in Beijing will need to pay for the emissions from their cars.
Zhang stated that the fee that car owners pay will depend on the emission level of their cars. For example, owners of high emission cars will have to pay a higher amount of tax than those with low-emission cars.
Zhang did not give details as to when the tax levy would commence.
