Daimler Recalls 9,201 Mercedes-Benz Cars In China

According to China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, German auto maker Daimler AG has started recalling 9,201 Mercedes-Benz models of Vito and Viano cars in China due to defective air conditioning systems.

The quality watchdog said in a statement that the recall included 1,796 imported Vito and Viano (639 series) produced between December 11, 2007, and September 8, 2010, along with 7,405 units of China-made Vito and Viano (636 series) produced between April 16, 2010, and September 30, 2010.

The recall was due to an air conditioning system problem that could cause an electrical short circuit, which may cause a fire if the car is operating in hot weather, or if the car is halted frequently while running or if the engine has been idling a long time.

Daimler and its Chinese joint venture, Fujian Daimler Automotive Limited, will fix this problem free of charge.
