Commitments For Green Olympics Fulfilled In China

Cao Qingyao, spokesman of State Forestry Administration, said on June 17 in the Olympic Forest Park that the seven commitments for Green Olympics had been fulfilled by the end of 2007.

Olympic Forest Park is the largest man-made greenland in Beijing, covering an area of 680 hectare, with more than 530,000 trees and also lakes and wetland.

Cao Qingyao said by the end of 2007, forest green rate of Beijing has reached 51.6%, and urban green coverage rate has reached 43%. The seven commitments Beijing has made for Green Olympics have been fulfilled successfully, which include: green rate of Beijing reaches 50%; green rate of mountainous areas reaches 70%; set up three green ecological barriers; set up a greenbelt of 23,000 hectare around five rivers and ten roads; build greenbelt of 12,000 hectare in urban areas; green coverage rate of urban areas reach 40%; nature reserves cover 8% of the city's total acreage.

In urban areas, green rate has been increased to 43%, with 12,641-hectare forest and more than 30 million trees. By the end of 2007, 20 nature reserves had been set up, covering a total area of 134,200 hectares.

Besides, green work of 31 Olympic gyms and 45 training centers is also progressing well and the construction work is winding up now.
