Wuhan, capital city of Hubei province in central China, has opened a video monitoring website on environmental protection to the public, on which information of emissions of 30 companies are available.

Prior to this, the online monitoring network was only for internal government administrative supervision.

The 30 companies are all those that have large emissions, such as Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Company; Budweiser Wuhan International Brewing Company., Ltd; Wuhan Chenming Hanyang Paper; Huaneng Yangluo Power Plant; and Shahu Sewage Treatment Factory. Citizens can look over the operation of pollution treatment facilities by watching online videos. Once there is an illegal emission, citizens can dial the environmental hotline 12369 to report directly to the Wuhan Environmental Protection Bureau.

Currently 129 statistical details about 111 companies in Wuhan are included in pollution sources monitoring automatic network, with data about transient flux, carbon dioxide emissions, sulfur dioxides, NH3 and pH value displayed on the screen in WHEPB's monitoring center. Automatic alarms will remind people if there is anything unusual.

More key companies with large emissions will reportedly be brought into the video monitoring website in the coming months.
