Hotel Green Action Fails In Beijing

The "Green Hotel Action", which was launched by hotels in Beijing as an effort to protect the environment and save costs, has now reportedly failed after being implemented for less than a year.

According to a representative from an unnamed five-star Beijing hotel quoted in local media, the hotel resumed providing amenities at the demand of guests who wondered why a five-star hotel could not offer a basic item like a toothbrush.

A representative from the Beijing Travel Hotel Industry says that reducing the use of amenities needs both the self-discipline of hotels and good habits from consumers.

In February 2006, China's Ministry of Commerce, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and other government departments said they expect 10,000 environmentally friendly hotels by 2010 as part of effort to improve ecological awareness in the hospitality industry.

Statistics with the China Hotels Association show that there are more than 200,000 hotels on the Chinese mainland.
