According to Feng Xingfu, deputy general manager of Beijing Public Transport, the city would buy another 300 buses which run on compressed natural gas, bringing their total number to 4,000.<\/p>\n<p>The public transport company has upgraded 11,000 buses since 2004, or 60% of the total. The number of renewed buses is expected to reach 20,000. In addition, the design of the new vehicles will be more passenger-oriented. For example, the buses will be lower and more accessible to the elderly, and handrails will be more convenient for passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicle emissions are a major source of pollution in the Chinese capital.
