Robert Glover, executive director of the charity Care for Children, has been nominated as a candidate to carry the Olympic torch in Beijing.<\/p>\n
Glover says, 'I feel honored to be nominated as a candidate to carry the torch. We will continue our work on helping disadvantage children in China in coordination with our Chinese partners.'<\/p>\n
Care for Children is a small focused charity registered in China, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and the USA, that since 1998 has been working in partnership with the Chinese government to facilitate the integration of orphaned children into loving long-term foster homes.<\/p>\n
Glover first came to China in 1996 as a UK social worker to research how he could use his professional training to support disadvantaged children, in particular orphaned and abandoned children. In 1998, he founded 'Care for Children' and moved to Shanghai with his wife, and their six children, to work in partnership with the Shanghai Civil Affairs on a Foster Care project to move children out of orphanages and into local Shanghai families.<\/p>\n
In 2002, Glover was awarded the prestigious White Magnolia award from the Shanghai Government, presented by the Vice Mayor of Shanghai Zhou Yu Mao. Following an invitation form the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Glover moved to Beijing in 2003 to direct a national project. In 2005, he received the prestigious Order of the British Empire (OBE) award from the Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for his work for Care for Children.<\/p>\n
