China has formally announced its target for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n
The country says that, by 2020, it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40% to 45% compared to the level in 2005.<\/p>\n
At a meeting presided over by China's premier, Wen Jiabao, the State Council also decided to integrate this target into the medium and long term national social, and economic development plans; and to formulate new measures to audit, monitor, and assess its implementation.<\/p>\n
Analysts say that by putting forward this clear target immediately before the Copenhagen Climate Conference, China has set a very good example for the international community and this move will have a major impact on the conference.<\/p>\n
The Copenhagen Climate Conference is to be held on December 7 to 18, 2009, and is intended to conclude a new agreement on greenhouse emissions for after the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol expires: in 2012.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
