Wu Xiaoqing, the vice minister of China's Ministry of Environmental Protection, stated at a recent conference that China had made dramatic achievements in waste water treatment in the past three decades, but the quality of water in the country's major water sources is still unsatisfactory. Wu said that the Chinese government would arrange funds of over CNY90 billion in the next two to three years for the construction of waste water disposal systems and to ensure that drinking water is safe.<\/p>\n
According to Wu, about 270 million people in rural China do not have access to safe drinking water.
