A carbon offset agreement has been signed at the UN Pavilion in the Shanghai World Expo Park, making the UN Pavilion the first international pavilion to join in the voluntary emission reduction initiative at the park.<\/p>\n
The initiative is said to have been launched jointly by Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange and the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation in United Nations Development Programme. Under the agreement, Shanghai International Consulting Company will purchase a voluntary emission reduction volume through the World Expo Voluntary Emission Reduction platform to offset the carbon emission caused by the construction and operation of the UN Pavilion. The carbon emission will be audited by SGS-CSTC, a global company offering verification, testing, and certification in the areas of agriculture, minerals, petroleum, and consumer products.<\/p>\n
During the Shanghai Expo 2010, the UN Pavilion will display the United Nations' successful practice and useful trials in sustainable development, climate change, and city management.
