Russian authorities are putting pressure on China's Heilongjiang Province officials to build a temporary dam at the confluence of the Heilong and Wusuli rivers.
Hopefully the dam will protect Russian cities from polluted waters in the wake of the pollution spill in Songhua River, a tributary of the Heilong River.
Xinhua reports that a temporary project will start on the Fuyuan waterway to block the flow of the polluted water and experts have been sent to Jiamusi to coordinate dam-building efforts.
It is estimated that about 100 tons of benzene spilled into the river.
