Later this month a public auction of 300 lucky car license plate numbers will be held in Guangzhou.

All the earnings from the auction will be used in constructing better transportation modes and dealing with traffic accidents.

Chinese treat numbers like 8 and 9 as lucky, while the number 4 is considered unlucky.

The 300 lucky numbers on sale will be selected by the Guangzhou Vehicle Supervision Department. The first auction is likely to take place on April 22.

The Guangzhou Finance Bureau has entrusted the Guangzhou Property Rights Exchange Commission to recruit auction organizations for the bidding.
