Chinese Rocker Supports Efforts To Save Rainforest

"Catcher in the Rye" lead singer Xiao Wei will be travelling to Papua New Guinea as a volunteer from May 11 to May 23 to support the efforts of the Greenpeace team currently based in the rainforest.

Greenpeace, along with the volunteers, have been invited by the Kuni local people of Papua New Guinea to assist in the demarcation of their land.

The Chinese rock singer has penned a letter for his fans:

Hi, I am Xiao Wei, vocalist and guitarist for Catcher in the Rye, one of China's earliest rock bands.

Instead of taking a company white-collar job like most of my college friends, after graduation I chose to be a singer because of my passion for music. That was a good and fun choice, if not that wise, as most people around me might say. To become a Greenpeace volunteer to go to the Paradise Forests is also a choice, which, I believe, is good, fun and also wise.

I simply do not want to feel guilty for being part of the destruction of the earth. I do not want to wake up in the morning and know that the floors underneath me are the very reason some people and animals have lost their homes. I do not want to talk to my three-year-old daughter and look directly into her innocent and hopeful eyes and tell her that orangutans have become only fairy tales.

That is why it is time that we all started to do something. Something real.

Imagine how boring life – and our hearing – would be if in ten years all the ancient forests were wiped off the earth, along with all the forest lives, including the unknown ones, and the forest sounds.

Imagine how boring life and our hearing would be if tomorrow when you woke up there had never been nor would there ever be any music.

For me, music is a belief, so are green and peace.
