Lotus Supermarket has organized its first trade union in China in Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province.

The Lotus Xuzhou store says it planned to establish a trade union when it was opened in 2004, but it was delayed for internal reasons.

The Federation of Trade Unions in Quanzhou District in Xuzhou has helped the Lotus Xuzhou store establish this trade union and with 78 other big supermarkets in China and more than 20000 employees, Lotus is eyeing more unions around China.

Last week rival Wal-Mart announced that it now has fifteen trade unions at various Wal-Mart stores around China. Chinese president Hu Jintao has expressed his desire to see more trade unions at foreign-funded businesses operating in the retail space in China.
