With a 7-meter huge black balloon resembling the CO2 emission from cars, WWF has launched its "20 Ways to 20%" energy saving campaign in China.
"Through various activities, we hope that more and more people will get involved to save energy on their own, which will ultimately help relieve the environmental problems caused by global warming," said Dermot O'Gorman, WWF China country representative.
Targeting at the general public, the nationwide campaign will last for two years and is expected to engage Chinese society in the practice of saving energy that will help contribute to the fulfillment of China's goal to reduce its per GDP energy consumption by 20% by the end of the 11th "Five-Year Plan" and thus mitigate environmental issues caused by global warming.
As a developing country with the largest population in the world, China is viewed as a key role in energy saving cause worldwide. Today, 96% of all carbon dioxide emissions are energy related with urban dwellers' energy consumption accounting over 25% of the country's total consumption.
The campaign, consisting of two phases, will run until 2008 during which WWF plans to launch tides of theme activities along with its partners. Apart from the 20 energy saving tips, a special website called www.20to20.org has been launched to encourage people's participation through online interactions. A special competition will also be organized to find out the "energy saving heroes" among the ordinary people in China.
