Smile Beijing Launches Weekend Environmental Campaign

More than 1000 volunteers in Beijing are promoting the concept of a Green Olympics in a campaign called "Smile Beijing: Volunteer Environmental Beautification Campaign" on the weekends.

The campaign is run by the Beijing Volunteers Association and 38 media in Beijing. The proposal calls upon all youth, volunteers and citizens in Beijing to participate in the campaign by saving resources, protecting the environment and working to create a healthier and happier capital city. They plan to hold most of the activities on the weekends.

Until the Olympics start in 2008, Beijing municipality will organize volunteer teenagers and senior citizens to work on a series of environmental beautification campaigns including street cleaning and tree planting in the communities, villages and schools on the weekends.
