The latest survey result released by the China Enterprise Survey System shows that 95.8% of the enterprises in China identify with social responsibility.

In the report called "Survey on Chinese Enterprise Operators' Growth and Development 2007", 95.8% of the 4586 respondents agree that good entrepreneurs have a strong sense of social responsibility and only 3.7% of them hold negative opinions of CSR.

Most of the 4586 entrepreneur respondents believe that the basic responsibility of an enterprise is "to create wealth for the society" or "to promote the nation's development", which accounts for 87.4% and 78.4%, respectively. 67.9% of them believe that an enterprise's ultimate responsibility is to create profit for its shareholders.

According to the survey, many entrepreneurs are also concerned with the cost of fulfilling CSR, with 69.7% of the respondents saying that fulfilling CSR will increase an enterprise's overall costs. 83.2% of the respondents say that CSR is important to a company's sustainable development, 11.5% of them believe it's not so important and 3.8% of them believe that CSR does not affect a company's sustainable development.

In the survey, 65.2% of the respondents say that enterprises' CSR increased in the past three years. It is believed that advancing enterprise brand image is the main driver for a company to fulfill its CSR.

The respondents say that polluting the environment and lack of honst practices are the two most prominent behaviors of violating CSR and stakeholder trust. They believe that operation difficulty, low quality of the operators and lack of sense of social responsibility are the main reasons for a lack of CSR in these businesses.

Wang Peiheng, director of the HR Research and Training Division of the State Council's Development and Research Center, told local media that this result indicates that in order to promote CSR, enterprises must increase their economic strength, entrepreneurs must improve their sense of social responsibility and the relevant principles must be perfected.

CESS was set up in 1993 as a professional researcher of China's enterprises. This is the 14th national entrepreneur report the organization has released. The report involves diversified industries including manufacturing, wholesales, retailing, and real estate. 12.8% of the companies under the survey are state-owned, 45.8% are limited companies, 15.5% are holding companies and 11% are private companies.
