Dalian's "Love Beside the Sea", a charity organization that is engaged in caring for children whose parents have been jailed for serious crimes, has fallen under suspicion in Chinese media.
As the name indicates, "Love Beside the Sea" is close to the sea and it fosters children, most of whose parents are criminals in prison. According to a news report on Sina.com, the organization's problem was first identified by a volunteer who found that RMB500 he donated in May was not accounted for and published. Subsequently, a lot of problems were exposed.
For example, according to the media reports, 70% of the donations have been appropriated for the village's management expenditures and some departments are not responsible enough and don't carry out their supervisory duties effectively.
Liu Yajuan, one of the volunteers, reported that this charity group has spent a large sum of the donations for wages and running expenses. In the first six months of this year, the Children's Village reportedly received more than RMB140,000 in donations, of which over RMB30,000 was allegedly used on the children, and more than RMB85,000 was used to pay the staff and write-off their expenses.
