Jean-Luc Chereau, president of Carrefour China region, announced in Chengdu that Carrefour would devote EUD1 million to support education in the middle and western parts of China over the coming three years.

Chereau made the announcement during the donation ceremony for Dayi Project Hope Elementary school in Chengdu. He said that the funds donated by Carrefour International Foundation would be mainly used to improve the educational facilities in the rural areas of China. The Dayi Project Hope Elementary school is the first school supported by this project. He said that Carrefour will build more schools in over 30 cities in Sichuan, Yunnan, Shanxi and other provinces.

According to Chereau, CIF has been dedicated to humanitarian support and education since its establishment in 2000. It has donated funds to build a project hope elementary school in Guang'an, the hometown of Deng Xiaoping. It has also supported patients who suffered from cataracts in Guang'an and Nanchong and donated medical respirators in Beijing during the 2003 SARS epidemic.

Jean-Luc Chereau also expressed his expectations to set up a one-to-one relation between the local Carrefour stores and project hope schools in their areas.

Founded in 1959, Carrefour is one of the largest retailers in the world. It has more than 10000 retail stores in over 30 countries.
