Bayer has donated medicines and medical appliances valued at RMB10 million to China's Sichuan Province which was hit by an earthquake on May 12.

Following a donation of RMB5 million in medicines and medical appliances on May 14 and May 19, the company has now announced plans to make an additional RMB5 million medicine donation to the earthquake area based on a further understanding of the needs of the area.

On May 14, Bayer donated moxifloxacin hydrochloride tablets and other medical materials, valued at about RMB2 million to Sichuan through the Red Cross Society of China. On May 19, the company dispatched another batch of moxifloxacin hydrochloride tablets worth RMB3 million to the area. Now having a deeper understanding of the local demand, it has decided to donate ciprofloxacin, another kind of antibiotic, valued at RMB5 million, to the disaster area.

Bayer also initiated an internal donation among its employees, encouraging its employees in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong to make donation for the earthquake affected people. A preliminary statistic shows that Bayer's employees have donated more than RMB500,000 in total. Bayer says it will provide matching donations, which means it will send a total of more than RMB1 million in cash to the earthquake area.

Michael Koenig, president of Bayer Group Greater China, says, "The earthquake has brought a loss that is hard to be evaluated to the local people, and as a socially responsible company, we are concerned with these people and hope to help them out with these emergency medical appliances and funds support."
