The Beijing Nangong Kitchen Waste Processing Plant, the first of its kind in Beijing, has been formally completed and put into operation.
The new facility, with a daily capacity of processing 200 tons of kitchen waste, can transform kitchen waste via special techniques into compost raw material and also extract fat from liquid food.
At present, according to local media reports, Beijing's kitchen waste mainly comes from more than 30000 restaurants and hotels as well as the dining rooms of over 170,000 schools and businesses across the city. It is estimated that there are about 1.22 tons of kitchen waste discarded by every 10,000 people every day in Beijing.
So far, twelve government departments, including the Beijing Municipality Management Commission and Beijing Municipal Reform and Development Commission, have jointly issued a circular, publishing the names of the first batch of restaurants for the trial operation of the kitchen waste system. This has included 122 Olympic signed hotels and 31 Olympic hosting venues.
