Nankai University, one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in China, has dismissed 168 doctorate students since 2006.

Tong Jiadong, the director of the Postgraduate Students School of Nankai University, said that dismissing students who are lagging behind is a step in achieving excellence. Tong stated that Nankai University had made sending down candidates for a doctorate a traditional mechanism and the school is monitoring the education of postgraduate students to ensure the quality of that education.

Dong said that Nankai University welcomes employees to attend the part-time postgradute programs, but added that they would only select those who are capable of completing the studies through strict review procedures.

It is learned that Nankai University has reduced the percentage of part time postgradutel students from the previous 50% to 10% as many of these students are behind with their studies and have not qualified for graduation.
