A recent sampling inspection result showed that 158 of the 178 batches of school uniforms manufactured by 89 companies are up to standard, according to the Guangdong Provincial Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision.

Officials say that compared with the result of 2007, the quality of school uniforms have been improved markedly from 52.2% to 88.8%, officials say.

The officials inspected school uniforms in Shenzhen, Shaoguan, Qingyuan, Jieyang, Dongguan, Jiangmen, Yangjiang, Zhaoqing, Meizhou, Chaozhou, and Yunfu and all came up to standard; 40 of the 42 batches in Guangzhou were up to standard; and two batches of the four inspected in Zhuhai were up to standard.

Decomposable aromatic amine in one batch of school uniforms is unacceptable, these were from Meihua brand uniforms manufactured by Guangdong Lianping County Kunpeng Clothing Company with the production date being March 2008. Decomposable aromatic amine may do harm to people's health.

Besides, the pH value of 18 batches is was outside the norm. As the mandatory standard goes, the pH value of textiles in direct skin contact should be in the range 4.0 to 7.5.

Experts warn that the new school uniforms should be washed with warm water before being warn to remove up such hazardous substances as formaldehyde.
