Shanghai Offers Subsidy To Remove High Pollution Vehicles

According to Chinanews.com, Shanghai plans to subsidize the purchase of vehicles reaching the national IV emission standard in an effort to get rid of the city's most highly polluting vehicles.

Under a new measure released by Shanghai, from June 1, 2009, to April 30, 2010, owners of automobiles that were under the National I emission standard or below, were licensed before December 31, 2002 and have paid the various taxes due will receive subsidies averaging CNY5,000 when purchasing a new environmentally friendly automobile.

It is learned that second-hand automobile trade markets and automobile recall centers in Shanghai will provide a one-stop service for people who want to update their automobiles.

Currently, there are 1.37 million automobiles in Shanghai, of which 334,000 are at the National I standard or below. These vehicles account for over 60% of the total emissions in Shanghai. It is expected that the pollution emissions from vehicles in Shanghai will drop by eight percentage points after the new measure is carried out.
