National Standard For Mineral Water Out Soon

August 26, 2009

China's new national standard for mineral water will be formally enacted on October 1, 2009.

One of the highlights of the new rule is that it limits the bromate content in mineral water by requiring the content of bromate in per liter of mineral water should not be more than 0.01mg.

While canceling the index of the total number of bacterial colonies, the new rule has added an index for three disease-causing bacteria and says that manufacturers of mineral water must not claim their products to have medicinal qualities unless they have gained formal approval to make such statements.

Bromate is commonly rated as a class 2B carcinogen.
