Beijing To Ban Tap Water For Water Landscaping

Beijing is now soliciting public opinions on a new rule on water pollution prevention which states that no tap water shall be used for water landscape sites.

Under the new rule which encourages the use of recycled water, underground water and tap water must not be used for water landscapes. To promote the use of recycled water, the government will formulate measures to develop recycled water businesses and expand the use of recycled water for irrigation. Besides, the rule says that recycled water must also be used for gardens and arboretums, environmental cleaning, and construction projects.

The rule states that the surface water will be better protected by banning vehicles carrying hazardous materials and other activities that may do harm to the water protection area. It says that the counties located in the upper reaches of a river shall compensate those on the lower reaches if they fail to keep the water of the river up to the standard.

In addition, the rule says that the total water consumption will be controlled to balance supply and demand.
