With the approach of the Year of the Tiger, China's State Forestry Administration has issued a circular which asks that three initiatives be undertaken to strengthen the protection of wild tigers.
The first initiative is to enhance the protection of wild tiger species and their habitat. The second initiative is to severely crack down on illegal behavior such as smuggling and selling of tiger products. And the third initiative is to regulate the domestication and breeding of tigers.
China has been reinforcing its efforts on wild tiger protection in recent years and has made some major steps forward. However, wild tigers in the country are still endangered: the shrinking habitat can no longer support wild tigers; both the supply and quantity of food for tigers are decreasing. 2010 is the Year of the Tiger in China. SFA also calls on the public to take action to protect tigers in the Year of the Tiger.
