A Child Welfare Week initiative has been formally launched in China to mark International Children's Day.

Jointly launched by The United Nations Children's Fund, the Department of Social Welfare and Promotion of Charities, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and the Social Development and The Public Policies College of Beijing Normal University, the initiative aims to develop a full-fledged welfare system for children in China.

According to Dr. Yin Yin Nwe, the UNICEF Representative to China, the first week of June is expected to be celebrated as the Child Welfare Week each year in the future.

Wang Zhenyao, the director of the Department of Social Welfare and Promotion of Charities, Ministry of Civil Affairs, admitted that currently little care has been given to children and much is owed to them. Wang said that the promotion of child welfare needs a social consensus, but unfortunately no such consensus has been reached to now.

The theme of this year's Child Welfare Week is reported to be "Her Name is Today".
