China's Ministry of Education is preparing to issue a standard for teachers' education which is expected to come out before the end of this year.

Drawn up by East China Normal University, the standard mainly targets teachers of primary and middle schools and it consists of teacher standards, teacher education standards, course standards and evaluation standards. In addition, it also sets out the three principles of "children first", "practice-orientated" and "lifetime study" to change the current education pattern that is said to give too much attention to textbook teaching and focuses on cramming.

It is learned that the standard raises the requirements for teachers. Under it most of the teachers currently working in primary and middle schools ould not be qualified for their posts.

The standard is expected to a general teacher education standard after it is published by the Ministry of Education.
