The department of health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government recently urged local residents not to buy or use two hair care products as they were found to contain an unapproved western medicine: Minoxidil.

The two products, which are manufactured by mainland herbal shampoo maker Beijing Zhangguang 101 Science and Technology Development Company, are called "Zhang Guang Gold 101 Super Effective Hair Growth Agent", and "Zhang Guang 101D Fa-bao". Minoxidil, which has not been approved for use in the SAR, has side effects that can include skin irritation, rash, and itching.

The health department said in a statement that it had also instructed the products' wholesalers to recall all units of the products from the market.
