The Bingling Hydropower Clean Development Mechanism project, which is said to be the largest of its kind in the world, has been unveiled in Gansu.

According to Li Ningping, president of BHCDM, BHCDM has a total installed capacity of 240 MW and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 760,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year.

As the first hydropower station invested by Gansu Power Investment Bingling Hydropower Development Company in the Gansu section of the Yellow River, the CDM project was initiated in June 2005. In May 2008, GPIBHDC signed an agreement with Enel, the Italian National Power Company, on certified emission reduction purchase. And it was finally and registered in the Executive Council of CDM projects of the United Nations in February 2009.

The Clean Development Mechanism is an international cooperation mechanism established under the Kyoto Protocol. It allows developed countries with a greenhouse gas reduction commitment to invest in projects that reduce emissions in developing countries as an alternative to more expensive emission reductions in their own countries.
