Shanghai Municipal Government plans to offer 540,000 energy saving lamps to low-income families in the city.

These lamps are reported to be provided by Zhejiang-based Yankon Group, one of the world's largest lighting equipment manufacturers. And the cost of these lights is shared by Shanghai municipal financial department and the central finance authority of China.

While providing these lamps, Yankon announced that the first batch of one million high efficiency energy lamps had been put in place as part of its efforts to celebrate the 2010 Shanghai Expo.

In addition to the 540,000 lights which are provided to the low-income families free of charge, the rest energy saving lamps of the company will be available to the residents at half price with a subsidy from the government. Yankon states that it will prepare a complete after-sale service system while making its products reach the national energy efficiency standards to protect the interest of its users.

Since 2008, the Chinese government has been carrying out a three-year program promoting energy saving lamps with central subsidies. In 2009, the government plans to promote 120 million energy saving lights with an investment of about CNY600, which is double that of 2008. It is estimated that this move will help save about 6.2 billion kilowatts of electricity and reduce emissions by 6.2 million tons of carbon dioxide and 62,000 tons of sulfur dioxide.
