Zhou Shengxian, the minister of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, disclosed at a recent global environmental forum that China has joined more than 50 international environmental conventions and established an internal management mechanism to fulfill these conventions.
According to Zhou, the 50 international conventions cover protecting the ozone layer, chemicals and hazardous waste, climate change, biodiversity, and nuclear and radiation security. Zhou said that China has eliminated the production of about 100,000 tons of ozone consuming materials and the consumption of 110,000 tons of the material, which accounts for 50% of those from the developing countries. In addition, China has released a plan on biodiversity protection and taken the lead in making measures on climate change.
Zhou called on countries to continue global environmental cooperation and on developed countries to fulfill their commitment and obligations to provide funds and technology to developing countries to assist with environmental protection. He said that China would join hands with the international community to cope with the global environmental challenges.
