Following a week of media reports and rumors about pornographic mobile texting, China Mobile has now pledged that it will stop the transmission of five kinds of spam messages without bringing any negative impact to ordinary users.
Last week, Chinese media reported that to coordinate with the special campaign jointly launched by China's nine government departments to fight Internet and mobile phone pornography, Chinese telecom operators will suspend the short message service of mobile phone numbers involved, and even terminate these numbers for serious cases.
However, China's three major telecom operators, including China Mobile's Beijing and Shanghai branches, all said now that they will not terminate mobile phone numbers and will only suspend mobile phones that send sexually explicit messages or photos if the local public security department asks for the suspension.
Li Kang, deputy manager of the customer service division of China Mobile's marketing department, told local media that to protect consumers' interests in using the mobile communication services, China Mobile will focus on stopping the sending of five kinds of spam messages, including fraudulent messages; pornographic messages; messages for the illegal sale of guns and invoices; false messages; and messages that disturb customers' normal lives. Li discloses that China Mobile's spam message reporting platform receives over one million complaints each months. Surveys show that customers in developed regions like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong are mostly hit by spam mobile messages with some users eceiving more than ten pieces each day.
Li called on customers to cooperate with the mobile service operator to beat down spam messages by reporting the originating numbers of message senders. Li states that China Mobile will fully protect customer's communication freedom and privacy in doing this.
